Tourism in Sofia (season 2026)

SOFIA - THE CHARMING CAPITAL OF BULGARIA

You can talk a lot and for a long time about Sofia ... This city in terms of historical and cultural heritage is not inferior to any other European capital! As for the age of the first settlement here, historians have not come to an exact denominator, it is only known that this is the 3rd century BC. Therefore, in Sofia you can see artifacts and buildings (their remains) of the Roman and Ottoman empires, the Thracian tribe of the Serds, who were the first to establish a settlement here.

In addition, Sofia most of all European cities suffered from destruction, raids of warlike tribes in the Middle Ages - Goths, Huns and others. There was destruction, albeit less significant, during the Second World War. Therefore, the legacy of the Roman and Thracian eras is not much preserved.

The main sights of Sofia

From a tourist point of view, the capital of Bulgaria is very attractive for outdoor activities at any time of the year. In the summer season, tourists from the coast like to go here on excursions to wander along the large cobbled streets and see:

  • Hagia Sophia, after which the capital is named - the oldest Christian temple, built in the 6th century.
  • Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky, built in memory of the Russian soldiers who died during the liberation of the country from the Ottoman yoke. Designed by Russian architect Pomerantsev.
