NEW ATHOS
Holy places
One of the advantages of this resort is the abundance of sights that cannot be visited in either one or two days - it's a pleasure to stretch it for all your vacation. In addition to the New Athos monastery, founded in 1875 under the auspices of Alexander III, it is worth visiting:
- The Iberian Mountain - there are the most interesting places for tours on its slopes. You will see the ruins of the Anacopia fortress, the most complete surviving building of ancient Anacopia in Abkhazia. There is the world-famous Novyafonskaya cave in the depths of the mountain, discovered by Givi Smyr in 1961. It is considered the largest in Eurasia.
- The Waterfall and the power station, and above them there is a very beautiful lake and dilapidated railway station "Psyrtsha".
- The grotto and the temple of the apostle Simon the Zealot is to the right from the lake and the railway tracks. The road will lead to a small cave where Simon the Zealot lived, according to the legend, one of the apostles of Christ.

Moreover, the capital of Abkhazia, Sukhum is just 21 km away from the New Athos. You can get there by public transport or by taxi for a tour. It is interesting to visit the monkey park in the capital. More about the rest in Abkhazia...
